HAIR London!

HAIR London

Yes it has been a LONG LONG time since I posted. Well, I have a lot to

catch you up on. Since I last updated I have gone to London with the

original Cast of HAIR! What can I say, my trip was STUNNING! I helped

the London crew learn all the wonderful hair designs that we created

for broadway and got to visit the AMAZING city of London! I had a

BLAST seeing so many different places and the different ways of life,

of working, and the weather.

The Cast is GREAT! The stage is almost the same, just a little

smaller. The only other differences are the truck is backwards, and

the rake of the stage is not as tall as it is in NY. I managed to get

some pics of the stage!

It was SOOOO great! I had a BLAST! I want to go back already!

Fashion WEEK

Lovies, Fashion Week is over. As you all know, the twice yearly fashion extravaganzas are a must attend in New York City for celebrities, trend setters and fashion magazine editors. This is the last year that Fashion Week will be held in Bryant Park, as the runway is being moved to Lincoln Center in the fall.
Models for the fashion world’s “big guns,” including Isaac Mizrahi, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and others unveiled new lines, and the world got a look at trends for the upcoming season. The New York Times announced, “In the End, Good Design Wins the Week.” Of course, clothing inspires new hair designs, and hair salons also present trends in tandem with fashions being shown on the catwalk.
New York City’s fashion week is an international event with a global feeling. The photos below give a peek of how hair, clothes, and fashion are working together for new looks this spring:
Tadashi Shoji: Flashy and glam are two words that describe clothing described this designer’s clothing evening wear line for 2010. The hair is sleek, counterbalancing the exquisite fabrics, textures, and patterns.
Adam Lippes: The Adam line featured unique designs, some with metallic glint and paint. The hair is messy chic, pulled up and away from the face.
BCBG Max Azria: Azria’s clothing was shiny and shimmering. The hair is in delightful disarray and held back in a ponytail.
Six finalists in the Lifetime’s Project Runway presented full collections in the tents at Bryant Park. Some of my friends were involved in taping the Project Runway finale, but we’ll all have to wait to discover the winners when the last show airs at the season’s end, many weeks from now.

Fashion Week

So as you may or may not know this week is Fashionweek. Therefore I have a little information for my lovelies on what it is and the history of the event.

What:

Designers show their latest collections in fashion shows. The most recent show was in September 2009 for Spring Fashion Week 2010 . The shows are sponsored by Mercedes-Benz so they are called Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Where:

New York City in Bryant Park (42nd and Sixth), an 8-acre park that is converted to a temporary fashion arena with tents. The Fashion Week tents are huge, air-conditioned and contain several venues for the designers to show their collections. The individual venues -- ranging up to almost 12,000 square feet -- come complete with runway, seating for attendees, backstage areas, lighting and sound. Some fashion designers choose to have their collections shown in showrooms or other off-site venues during the week.

When:

Twice a year. The Fashion Week fall shows are held the preceding winter (February). The spring shows are held the preceding late summer (September).

Who:

Fashion shows are attended by the media, fashion designers, celebrities, and buyers. The Fashion Week shows are invitation-only and each designer is responsible for their guest list.

Why:

Fashion Week is an excellent opportunity for American (and a few international) designers -- ranging from Oscar de la Renta to Zac Posen -- to show off their upcoming collections. The fashion shows are often entertaining, accompanied by loud, mood-setting music and changing lighting. The press writes about and photographs the runway collections for newspapers, magazines, internet and television so the general public can see what is going on in fashion.

History:

Fashion Week is produced by 7th on Sixth, which was originally formed by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1993, then acquired by IMG -- a lifestyle and sports marketing and management firm -- in 2001.

FL Here I COME!

Doing a little shoot in FL for the weekend! check me out for new pics!

2.03.2010

Day In The Life: Daniel Koye

Lovies, some of you have asked me what it’s like working in New York City as a celebrity hair designer and wig stylist. I’m in motion six days a week with one day off to rest and relax. Today, I’m starting a new blog series that will give you a glimpse into what it’s like to be behind the scenes, working on photo shoots, theatrical productions, weddings and private clients. While the venues may change, my goal is always the same – to create flawless hair designs and styles.

So, what’s a typical day like for me? I usually wake up around 7:45 a.m., shower, and dress. Then, I’m on the road traveling from New Jersey to NYC. I’m frequently working on a photo shoot will last from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. As a hair stylist for photo shoots, I create one or two looks for one model, working throughout the day to make sure the hair stays perfect and photo ready.

Around 4:00, when the shoot is over, I grab a cup of coffee and a bite to eat. Then, I’m off to Broadway, to the rough and tumble atmosphere of live theatre. As you know, I’m doing hair and wig styling for Hair at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre at 302 West 45th Street (between 8th and 9th Ave). I arrive at the theatre around 5:30 p.m. and begin styling the wigs for the 8:00 p.m. show. It’s a fast-paced night, getting three to five wigs ready for the actors, then doing cues (a quick styling that takes a few seconds) during the show backstage and behind the audience. My typical routine goes something like this:

6:45 p.m. Michael James Scott arrives for his wig.
7:00 p.m. Josh Lehman comes in for his wig,
7:30 p.m. Ato arrives, and I style his hair.
7:40 p.m. Steel Burkhart arrives, and I style his hair
7:45 p.m. Nichole Lewis shows up for her wig
8:20 p.m. I do a backstage cue for Andrew Koeer.
8:30 p.m. Another cue, this time for Josh Lehman
9:30 p.m. It’s time for the mustaches
10:15 p.m. Another cue, this time for Gavin Creel
10:30 p.m. After the dance party onstage, the show ends, and the actors come to the hair room where I remove their wigs and place them on Styrofoam heads where they wait for the next show.

I usually eat dinner or a snack while the show is going on. On occasion, a celebrity guest will show up. The other night, Patti LuPone, whose I styled for Gypsy, came backstage to watch the show with her son, and we chatted.

While my life can glamorous and exciting, it can be downtown tedious at times to create those breezy, effortless looking celebrity styles. One of the things I enjoy most about this blog is hearing from those of you who follow me on Twitter and read this blog. It reminds me that sharing celebrity tips and trends gleaned from my work in the Big Apple gives you special insider info that helps you stay confident, sexy, and fresh.

Headbands: A Simple, Chic Way to Change Your Look! and an announcement!

Lovies, headbands are one of the hottest new trends in hair accessories. A great headband is a simple way to change your look for every occasion. Check out these pics to see how celebrities are using headbands to add elegance, glamour and casual sophistication for day or night.

Photo #1: Natalie Portman

Natalie is wearing a sparkly headband with a darling up do. The focus here is on the star’s soft smoky eyes with the hair accessory providing a very subtle, but deliberate final touch. This is a great evening look.

Photo #2: Christina Hendricks

For a red carpet event, Christina wears a chic gold headband with appliqué on the side. The overall effect is elegant yet refreshing with our attention focused on her soft eyes and lashes.

Photo #3: Lauren Conrad

Lauren’s luxurious locks are flowing but controlled with this beautiful headband covered with a sparkly appliqué. The look is natural and perfect, not too much adornment, not too little.

Photo #4: Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa has a simple look that is great for day or night, with her hair held back in a pony tail and a simple braid adding texture. The two bands on her hair accessory add visual interest and hold her bangs in place. Depending on her make-up and clothing, Vanessa can adapt this hairstyle to look as exotic as a gypsy or as casual as a college girl.

Hair Accessories: Look Like a Star for Every Occasion

Lovies, it’s time to take a break from the mid-winter doldrums and start planning for spring. Hair accessories are front and center as the hottest trend for every occasion. The right accessory can enhance your hair for work or weekend dates and add glamour to a special day. I’m seeing classy and unique hair accessories in my work on photo shoots, weddings, and red carpet celebrity events. Sit down with a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and your favorite stack of trashy mags, and you’ll see what I mean.

What’s fresh and new when it comes to hair accessories? Here’s a short list to get your imagination fired up.

Headbands in fresh new styles with appliqué, embroidery or decals are a great fashion option. If you’re short on time and on the run, keep a stack handy. A quick up do with a great headband will give you a polished look on short notice.

I'm a huge fan of Forever21 for things like little clips and bands...they're so fashion forward and so cheap! You can transform any old sweater into something trendy with a $5 accessory!

Here are some of my favorites (and P.S., doesn't a great headband just scream Blair Waldorf?!) Find these and more at Forever21 online by clicking here.

Hair clips and barrettes are also back in style! For jazzy appeal at a social get together, take the simple route and wear a beaded clip. For evening events, an elegant clip flecked with rhinestones or sparkles will make you feel like a star.

PLEASE tell me you've already been around the block a few times and are an old pro at Etsy? I LOVE this sight, especially for things like hair accessories! How awesome to have things that are totally unique! Yes, Forever21 is super cheap, and there's one in almost every major city (and to be honest, I think there may be WMDs hidden at the store in Union Square, it's such a major chaos intersection!), but I am in LOVE with some of these finds from Etsy:

This lovely plush white flower actually has a skull and crossbone center! I love it when hard meets girly-girly soft!

This one is from BombshellClips at Etsy! Check here out here! Also, if you hurry, there is a Buy One Get One sale through Sunday!

This is also a great find from Etsy, from a shop called French Market Stitch by Olga Degtjarewsky. Her shop seems to cater to the burlesque performer, but even if you don't want to put on a show, you can tease a little with this retro-flavored feather piece. To be honest, I swooned a little over this one. Check out Olga's shop here.

Hair ribbons, appliquéd, beaded, or embroidered add a stunning final touch for that very special soiree.

This is the best DIY project of the blog! Find your local craft store and buy about a half a yard (a foot and a half) of ribbon! Depending on your look you may want more or less, but you want to have enough to wrap around the head, and also to tie a nice bow. Buy as many as you like in colors you love, and keep them around the house. They're instant color, and verrrrrrry Chanel. Also a fantastic fall back for days when you can't be bothered with anything other than a ponytail or a loose bun, to just add a pop of color and a purposeful "I meant to do that" with your hairstyle, and run out the door. For under $10 you can walk away with some amazing finds. And since you don't need much, check out the scrap bins too. If you are a craftsy person, add some elastic and make it into a soft band, or maybe weave them together... What ideas have you seen? Any looks you're dying to try?

The options are nearly endless, and you can add creative flair by making your own unique designs.

Lovies, send me a photo of you wearing your favorite hair accessory. If you’ve designed your own, provide a two or three sentence description of how you made it. We’ll be featuring your photos in our gallery in the next few weeks. And if you have any links to creative up-and-coming hair accessory designers you love, please send them my way!

Scarlett Johannson: Simply Seductive Hair

Lovies, if you would like to exploit your hair’s seductive possibilities, Scarlett Johannson is a great role model with stunning, yet simple, styles for day and night. Take a look at some recent pics...

Photo #1: Scarlett pulls off a weekend look, perfect for running errands or a Saturday coffee date. Her hair is twisted into an up do style with a little bun pinned down on the side and a few seductive wisps of hair here and there. This pretty hairdo is simple, chic, classy, casual…and delightfully messy.

Photo #2: At this red carpet event, the Miss Scarlett is wearing extensions woven into her hair, giving her a polished, glamorous Hollywood-style aura. For a similar effect without hair extensions, use a two-inch round barrel ceramic curling iron. The ceramic protects your hair by creating a barrier between the heat element in the curling iron and your locks. It is a great tool for smoothing out and straightening the cuticle and giving you an impeccable look for that special evening out on the town.

Photo #3: Johannson is wearing a charming chignon behind her ear and pulled to the side, with bangs across her forehead. The chignon is a perfect size for her face and has a disheveled, yet elegant continental appeal that is retro yet very contemporary The bangs frame the actress’ face and give her a soft, sensual appeal. This can be a day or evening look, depending on the type of makeup you wear.

And, lovies, news flash for you! The stunningly beautiful and talent Ms. Johansson will be performing on the New York City stage in A View from the Bridge. This is a 14-week limited engagement starting January 24 at the Cort Theater located at 138 W. 48th Street. Scarlet, who was born in the Big Apple, launched her acting career in an off-off Broadway play and went on to went on to gain critical acclaim for her work in The Horse Whisperer, Ghost Wars, Lost in Translation and many other flicks.

Five Simple Resolutions for Great Hair in 2010

Hello, lovies,

This year, my New Year’s resolutions are simple – take time to relax, stay physically active, and eat a nutritious diet. It’s amazing how small changes in your lifestyle can lead to big changes in your health. The same goes for your hair. A simple routine for hair care is a small investment with a big pay back.

The good news is it’s easy to follow a simple hair regimen that helps you feel sexy and confident. As the New Year gets into full swing, consider adding these five simple resolutions to your list:

  • Invest in maintenance to keep your hair in good shape. That means getting a trim every three to six weeks, even if you’re growing out your locks.
  • Consult with your hair dresser to buy hair products that are right for your hair type.
    • For colored hair, use a shampoo and conditioner formulated to protect your color and keep it looking vibrant.
    • For curly hair, ask about products to accentuate those lovely curls and ringlets.
    • For dry hair, try out a deep conditioning treatment like Bumble and Bumble Deeep.
  • Spoil your hair. Put 15 minutes aside every day to refresh and revitalize your hair. For straight hair, use a blow dryer to coax your hair into shape or a curling iron to smooth the cuticle. For curls, spray a little water here and there and scrunch with your fingers. Bumble and Bumble’s Prep is a great product for quick touch ups.
  • Reap the benefits of a healthy, well-balanced diet. You are what you eat, and your hair and nails need good nutrition to stay strong and shiny. If you’re on the go without time to eat right or under stress, ask your doctor about taking a multi-vitamin.
  • Stick to a routine. Wash your hair every other day. On alternate days, rinse it out in the shower, then condition and comb it out.

Lovies, remember it takes 30 days to establish a new habit. Put this list on a bulletin board as a reminder.

If you’ve got a great hair care routine that works for you, send me a photo and a note describing your regimen. Every week, I’ll be featuring several lovies in a photo gallery on celebrityhairbyyou.com. It’s your chance to shine in 2010!

Daniel's Tips: Bb SumoTech

New format... trying some new ideas in our blogging, and we're going to try one blog FILLED with tons of tips!

First off: this product gives a great matte finish to any style, but if you use too much it can get really sticky. So, as always, start small! Maybe a dime sized amount, and make sure to warm it up in your palms. The product comes out of the jar white, and you don't want that residue on your hair!

We're going to focus on three uses for this product today:

Spiking short hair

Calming bangs

and

De-frizzing hair

And today's celeb is the lovely, amazing Audrey Tautou!Okay, obviously Audrey has an adorable, short hairstyle that is largely possible because of her natural hair texture. Let your hair air dry and then warm up some Bb SumoTech in your fingers, and simply twist, lift and flick!

Another fun thing to do is to use this product on damp-ish hair for finishing bangs, like our lovely Audrey in this picture!

Now, lastly, let's talk about a nice smoothing, finishing. Mix into your palms and distribute evenly across your style.

A great versatile product!

Do you use Bb Sumotech? Have any opinions to share? We want to know what you think...

Back to the grind, PRODUCT REVIEWS!!

Product of the Day:

Bumble and Bumble Sumotech

According to Bb, this product is not a wax, not a paste, and not a creme, but a "midweight moulding compound that's a combination of all three".

The product is usable for all people, great for styling short hair, but also won't overwhelm fine hair, and great for hair with texture.

Stay tuned for tips all day!

A New Year's Update!

Hello Lovies!

So I'm back! Happy New Year! What are your resolutions for the new year? Or the new decade?! Amazing isn't it! Time just keeps flying by.

You may or may not know by now that in addition to styling and working with celebs on movies and television, I also am a part of the Hit Broadway Show, "HAIR".

Yes, I do hair for HAIR. :)

Maybe you watched NBC on New Year's Eve and saw Carson Daily's new yearly New Year's Bash, and if you did, you saw the cast of HAIR performing "live"...

What's amazing about it is... it's totally pre-recorded! I got to the theatre at 4pm just to make sure I didn't hit any traffic on my way into Midtown Manhattan. I made it in record time from my home in New Jersey easily. Amazing! Everyone in the show got into their wigs.

For the special performance I did Jackie, Nicole, Krystal Joy, Steel, Ato and Michael James.

<--- Jackie wears long brown hair extensions that perfectly match her own hair.

Nicole's wig is a huge afro with shells at the base --->

Krystal has a ponytail wig attached with a headband

I have tons of pictures from the event and I'll post them all day long.

We rehearsed once, and then just before we were getting ready to shoot our first run of Let The Sun Shine, Carson came out, did the Nivea Plug AND did the countdown! Pre-recorded at 7:30...

We videotaped our segment twice, and were out of there! I was back at my house in New Jersey by 8:30 and could celebrate in the warmth inside!

Stay tuned all day for more pictures and updates!
