More thoughts on "no 'poo"

In the business, this concept of not shampooing every day is sometimes referred to as "no 'poo". It has a cult following among curly haired girls, but also among those with dry hair or serious intense color, like my assistant Anna Lise and her beautiful not-so-natural red hair! So here are some of her thoughts about going "no 'poo" or, in her case, "less 'poo" and the different hairstyles to wear while she waits out the week.

---------------------

Hey all! I am so pleased to talk about my experience cutting back on shampooing my hair. I made the decision for a few reasons.
1. I have incredibly dry hair, skin, scalp, etc.
2. I have very thick, long hair that takes forever to dry out and little patience or time to do it every day!
3. Because of my fabulous red hair color, I don't like how quickly it fades by lots of washing.

So here's what my normal week looks like hair-wise.

Day 1
Shampoo, condition, deep condition, blow dry

This is a bit of an ordeal. But I relish it. And I enjoy it, mostly.

I wear my hair down for the day, then at the end of the night, I try to make sure I brush it really well and then put it up in a butterfly clip. I tried to find a picture of what this might look like, but it is akin to Pebbles from the Flintstones.

Day 2 Wake and Go!
I find that most often I can get by to day 2 without any real adjustments or futzing. Clipping my hair up overnight gives it some weight. If I think about it, I keep it in the clip under the shower cap. I find the steam helps make the volume even better. After my shower, you can simply brush and go.

Now, I have really dry hair. If you have oilier hair, you may want to use either an aerosol hairspray or a dry hair shampoo on your roots.

Day 3
"Growing Out Your Bangs" Day

Day 3 is when the oiliness can tend to get in the way. You can always use more dry shampoo or hair spray. Even if you don't have "bangs" you can use these "growing out my bangs" look, like Jen Aniston in this picture. It's a simple braid. Or just using two bobby pins to pull the bang part of your hair back. It's a little easier than a headband. And no headband headache!

As hair gets oilier it's important to keep brushing it often and regularly. I will admit that you are supposed to use a boar bristled brush. The natural bristles help to spread the oils from your scalp down the hair shaft. But I don't use a fancy brush, just a regular one. I find it works just fine. But if anyone wants to give me a fancy natural bristled brush, I'll take it! (a-hem, Daniel? Christmas Bonus!)

So just make sure you give yourself some Marsha Brady moments for brushing each morning and night.

Day 4 It's time for up-do's
I kinda love the retro flavor of what not shampooing every day allows me. So I really like to rock a beehive on the last days of the blow-out. My first thought for a style inspiration was Amy Winehouse, because Lord knows she likes the beehive...but she's too much mess for this hot look! And I found this great pic of Rachel Bilson!

For this look you'll need a simple hairband. For cheap, chic headbands, I always start at Forever21, and they even have one like the gold chain Rachel is wearing in this pic!

So by this point, your hair has got some natural body, and you've probably have had to succumb at least once if not twice to using dry shampoo or hairspray. But because of this, your hair has a lot of natural texture.

This chic twist is so simple, just pull your hair into a pony, start to twist from the base, and pin up. It doesn't need to be pretty, just up and a little textured and messy. To finish, use the headband to pull any flyaways. Easy as pie!

Days 5-? See how long you can go...
By this point, for some reason or another, I'm generally washing my hair. I may have a day off (yes, sometimes Daniel gives me a day off!), or maybe I have a hot date with my BF, or I'm having dinner with my boyfriend's mom, so I decide it's best to shampoo. But there are lots of in-between styles to use. Like some of these nice side and romantic ponies.

So that's a start. In closing I'll say that it took me about a year to get used to not showering every day, or even every other day. So there are no hard and fast rules. But your scalp, color, hair and your pocketbook will thank you!

Daniel's Tip #4, Shampooing Your Hair

So you made it through today! How'd it work? It probably was a bit of a stretch for those of you who have oilier hair. Or maybe you work out at the gym, or live in a humid client (I'll discuss more next post!)

I want to emphasize two things:

1. there is no rule for hair, this one included. If you can cut down on shampooing to every other day, you're saving yourself time, money, and also giving your hair more natural nourishment and helping it stay healthy!

2. training your hair takes time, and no week is the same. There might be a week when you can squeeze 3 days out of a blow-out! Or maybe you can barely make it through day one. You'll also find, once you've been doing it longer, you'll have to plan your life a bit around it! My assistant, Anna Lise, has been washing her hair about once a week for almost 2 years now, and she says it took her almost a year to get used to it, and it's still a bit of a plan. She schedules in shampoos! And she tries to schedule them around her social life! If she has a hot date on Friday, she may shampoo Friday morning, or Thursday, because she doesn't want to be rocking the 3-day-old 'do for a hot date.

I think this is quickly becoming a two-day post! So stay tuned for more tips on extending the life of your hair-do, saving yourself time and money, and the fun new looks to rock while you're doing it!

Daniel's Tip #3, Shampooing Your Hair

Okay! So now that you had some beauty sleep, you're going to need a few tools to get through this morning.

I'm sure you've not washed your hair for at least one day before, but the idea is that we don't immediately go for the ponytail!

First necessity:
A Shower Cap

This one is from the Bathina line at Benefit, isn't it super retro and cute!

So hide your hair under your shower cap and then use your normal bathing routine, shower, bathe, whatever you like!

Now, the nice thing is that this cuts some time out of your shower routine. For day one, you are likely not going to need a whole lot of fluffing. If you slept with butterfly clips in, your hair probably still has a little volume. But just to be safe, grab your hair dryer, and on the lower, warm setting, flip your head over, and just blast your roots while you brush downward (remember you're upside down). What we're doing is trying to get the oils that have come to the root of the hair folicle to move down the hair shaft. Using a natural bristled brush is best for this, though they are expensive and an investment! So start by using what you have.

You don't have to go all Marsha Brady on me, but give it a good brush, maybe 3 minutes? And remember, the heat is really just for a little bit of oomph, not to dry, so just focus on the roots and avoid the delicate, dry ends.

Daniel's Tip #2, Shampooing Your Hair

So you washed your hair this mornig, you styled it, you looked awesome. Now it's time to go to bed. Depending on your hair type and your style you may choose to just let your hair be and sleep away. If you have curly hair with a lot of resistance this might be fine, or maybe just use a simple cotton headband to pull it away from the face.

Otherwise, for a little extra volume come morning, you can use one or two butterfly clips. They look like this:

Simply pull the front pieces hair to the top of the head and clip.

Now sleep my darling and rest.... we'll fluff your style tomorrow.

Daniel's Tip #1, Shampooing Your Hair

So a little science lesson first:

Your body has sebaceous oil glands that secrete sebum, which is the body's natural way of moisturizing and waterproofing your skin and hair. Without getting too technical, your body processes the fat you eat and that's in your body and then expresses it through the hair shaft.

So your hair is meant to be a little oily.

Back in the day, really as recently as the 1950s, women weren't even washing their own hair! They were going to the salon once a week, having their hair professionally washed and set. We're actually seeing a trend back this way with the blow-out.

But let's take one day at a time...

Step one: Shampoo your hair

I love Redken's Color Extend shampoo. If you don't have colored hair, I am shocked! (it seems most everyone has some highlights or lowlights these days!) But if your hair is au- natural, than use a shampoo of your choice, mild and a little moisturizing, perhaps like Redken's All Soft.

So Shampoo your hair as you normally would, then condition, but AVOID YOUR ROOTS. Remember those sebaceous glands, they're going to do it for you! Rinse, dry, style as usual.

Thought of the Day: How Often Should You Shampoo Your Hair?

I get this question all the time, and there is only way that I would choose to answer this question that can be universal:

Not every day.

How often? Now that depends on a few things...

Check in throughout the day to get my thoughts on this one and products to use to help you keep some style even when not shampooing...

Daniel's Tip #3, Bb Curl Concsious Holding Foam

Here's a product word-to-the-wise.

Bb ain't cheap, and this product does retail for around $27 a bottle.

And there is a delicate balance of how much is too much. Too much can result in a very crunchy curl. Crunch is not sexy.

So start small. Again, it is always easier to add, rather than take away.

Daniel's Tip #2, Bb Curl Concsious Holding Foam

This product can also give great volume if you blow it dry with a diffuser application.

Simply apply as in our previous tip and then hang head so you can hold the hair dryer perpendicular to your head, not "up", but more "out". It might take some practice but the volume will be worth it!

(and then walk around with a fan to blow in your face, and you'll look just like Miss Swift on her album cover...!)

Daniel's Tip #1, Bb Curl Concsious Holding Foam

Curly girls will be able to attest that not every curly style is the same, and neither is every curly hold.

This gives a hard hold, but hair will still look soft.

For this first tip of the day, simply apply to the palms of your hand (maybe about the size of a decent sized orange), and then emulsify in your hands. Or as Bb calls it, "activate". (how fancy!) Then simply scrunch through your hair

Product of the Day: Bumble and Bumble Bb Curl Conscious Holding Foam

Good morning!

What a fun, great product especially for curly and wavy girls... Bb considers it a "must for curly types in need of more hold and structure".

Well, we shall see about that, now, won't we!

12.16.2009

Daniel's Tip of the Day, Bed Head Superstar Thermal Blow-Dry Lotion

Okay, lovelies, here's the one big tip with this one...

GO TO TOWN! Yes! Use a lot! Use liberally! I know I always say "build" or take it slow, but this one you can just rock out.

Okay so don't use a whole bottle, but you get what a mean!

To get luscious, volume-tastic locks like little Miss Cruz here...

Layer up on the Superstar Thermal Blow-dry Lotion, then while drying, try to pull your hair as vertical as possible. Maybe even bend at your waist a little bit. The more straight up your hair it, the bigger it will be!

If you really want huge volume, after you blow each section, you can hard set it.

Don't know what this means?

Well, have I got news for you! Very soon in the new year I'll be launching my new website which will have instructional how-to videos for you to use at home! I know you love getting your hair all done in the salon, but you probably don't love paying for it! And why should you! My website will teach you how to do this and every other trick step by step...

So start getting excited!

Product of the Day: Bed Head Superstar Thermal Blow-dry Lotion for Thick Massive Hair

One superstar product today, one superstar celeb, and one super awesome tip... stay tuned to figure out what it is!

According to one of my resident fav brands, Bed Head, this product builds body, holds stye, conditions and repairs and also helps protect from head and styling damage.

And it finds you a date for Friday night.

Sadly one of these is not true.

I love our celeb of the day and she has such luscious hair... check back and get my insider tips!

12.15.2009

Daniel's Tip #5, Bed Head Hard To Get Texture Paste

Can you make your actual bed head hair look sexy?

Absolutely!

When hair is dried and has a little bit of texture already, flip your head over and start working some Texture Paste from the back of the head's roots towards the front. A little goes a long way. Start small, you can always add. Keep shaking from the roots and letting the hair fall (you're still upside down, FYI!) Once you've worked through the hair, just toss your hair effortlessly back up and you're set.

Then grab a wife beater and a black bra and you're totally Alba-fied!

Daniel's Tip #4, Bed Head Hard To Get Texture Paste

If you are a few days between shampooing (which is what I recomend if you haven't picked that up, yet!), you can rock a super sexy pony.

Give yourself some volume at the crown by back-combing the hair, just a little. Use some Texture Paste (25 cents worth) on the tips of your fingers, and start combing through into a ponytail. Even use it to twist the ends together, to create an awesome, uniform pony.

Daniel's Tip #3, Bed Head Hard To Get Texture Paste

Gosh I love this haircut.

For shorter hair, towel dry and use 50 cents worth warmed really well in your palms. Simply spread through your hair and piece it out! You can let air dry or follow with any normal styling routine, like this super cute side flip!

Daniel's Tip #2, Bed Head Hard To Get Texture Paste

This product is fab for holding and styling your bands to the side. Perhaps you've cut them yourself and they're woefully short, or you just need a little control, or you're growing them out, or you just want a little change up.

Again, use about 25 cents worth (less if you bangs are really thin), just on the tips of your fingers. Make sure to really warm it up--you don't want lumpy product. Lumpy product=lumpy hair!

Daniel's Tip #1, Bed Head Hard To Get Texture Paste

So I gotta say, I love this celeb for her hair alone. And this is one of my favorite looks, though for the life of me I have no idea when she rocked it... Anyone know what era this look is?

Love me some Jessica Alba.

For this piece-y styled crop, use about 25 cents worth of Bed Head Hard To Get Texture Paste. Warm between fingers and simply shape as needed. It gives great hold and a hot, matte finish!

Product of the Day: Bed Head Hard To Get Texturizing Paste

Happy Tuesday, lovelies!

This product from one of my favs, Bed Head by TIGI, gives hair a light, matte and separated look, great for piece-y looks.

According to Tigi, it creates thickness and separation, moisturizes and has a clean feel and scent.

Check in all day to see our celeb of the day and hair care and style ideas!

Daniel's Tip #2, Bb Curl Concsious Reactivating Mist

So let's say you have wavy hair, but Tip #1 didn't really get them to the curl you so desire to have, a la Anna Lynne...

When you hair is still damp, but mostly dry (maybe 85% dry, with a little bit of moisture), spray away from about 6 inches away. Here's the super secret part--pull your hair into 4 or 5 little buns around your head. Either blast with a hair dryer or do some laundry in your basement (or watch 90210 on Tivo?) while you wait for the buns to dry. When they're dry to the touch, simply remove from the buns and shake, shake, shake away!

Isn't fun being a curly-haired girl?

Daniel's Tip #1, Bb Curl Concsious Reactivating Mist

So let's say you have a little extra texture to your hair, not quite curly, but a little wave. This product can make a little a lot!

Spray from 6-7 inches away onto damp hair. Use as much as you want to help achieve the curl you desire (though the more you use, you run the risk of getting a little crunchy, so just a word of caution!)

Simply let air dry or blow dry with a diffuser!

I just gotta say, I've loved/hated Anna Lynne McCord since she was on Nip/Tuck. She's just so freakin' gorgeous! She looks like you'd just hate her for being so blessed genetically! And with curly hair to boot.

Product of the Day: Curl Conscious Reactivating Mist

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

This lovely little bottle helps to "reawaken soft waves or tame hyperactive curls", save Bb, can be used morning and night, at any time throughout the day. Their only tip is to use last when layering with other products.

Daniel's Tip #5, Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Anti-Frizz Serum

How often do you wash your hair?

I recommend you wash your hair, AT MOST, every other day.

Soon I'll devote a blog to shampooing, but today, if you are already a smart little cookie who's only washing her hair every other day, this product is gentle enough to use two days in a row, without washing! It won't get greasy or build up. And you don't have to just wear your hair in a ponytail on day two either!

Simply wake up, spray with a water bottle, and restyle as needed, or if your hair is dry, frizzy or curly, just reapply and shape your style as needed.

Daniel's Tip #4, Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Anti-Frizz Serum

If you tend to wash your hair at night you can use Anti-Frizz Serum on your toweled dried hair at night! It will calm your frizzy hair, and sleeping (as opposed to standing up and moving around waiting for it to air dry) tends to add volume and texture naturally.

Put 50 cents worth onto your fingers and massage though your hair Then fall asleep, princess! Wake up to natural beauty! In the morning, you just need to spritz your hair with a little bit of water and away you go!

Daniel's Tip #3, Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Anti-Frizz Serum

If you are going to blow out your curly or wavy hair and know it tends to get frizzy again, on towel dried hair use 50 cents worth or our new favorite steal, and blow dry you hair as normal!

Simple, right?

Add a little to the ends if they are especially dry.

Still simple. And less than $5!!!

Daniel's Tip #2, Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Anti-Frizz Serum

I know it's every woman's curse, if you have straight hair you wish it was curly, curly wishes it was straight, and wavy girls just want their hair to do something other than be caught in between. I have such curl-envy of SJP's goldilocks' locks...

Here's a tip for your Curly Gals out there. After a day in the humidity... okay, so maybe this is a tip for you Curly Gals living in Miami! Or keep it in your back pocket for next July...

Anyway, after a day in the humidity, if you've got a big night ahead you don't want to take a full shower and re-wash your hair.

Take about 50 cents worth of product. Really warm it up, it's already liquidy, but still warm it between your palms to evenly distribute. Then use sparingly where your hair has become frizzy. This will calm and reshape the curls for the day. You can even just coat each individual curl and re-coax into place.

Hot and sexy, for $5 a bottle.

Seriously! All fashion and style should be this affordable! Kudos Garnier!

Daniel's Tip #1, Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Anti-Frizz Serum

Okay, I'm cheating a little today and taking the easy way out and using our celeb of the day none other than Garnier spokeswoman and style icon, Sarah Jessica Parker!

Here's the reason we love/hate SJP. Because she always looks so freakin' fabulous. I'm sure this is a burden, having been Carrie Bradshaw for such a long time, she can't go into Juicy sweats and walk around town. Her image has become synonymous with style and seemingly effortless glamour. She's the girl next door. Sure, she's cute and she's skinny, but she's got impeccable STYLE. And everyone can cultivate style!

Enough philosophizing! Here's how to get SJP's simple, sexy every day look:

Let your hair just be. Whatever texture it is, curly, wavy, straight. Part of SJP's sexy look is that she has a constant "I'm totally comfortable, so I must look good!" attitude about her. Simply towel dry your hair (and the more towel dried versus simply not totally wet the better, fyi!), and put about a quarter sized amount of Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Anti-Frizz Serum into your hands. This is probably a pump or two. Warm up between your palms, and evenly distribute onto your damp hair, massaging it in. Then leave it alone! It's simple and easy, and it's effortlessly fabulous. My favorite kind of fabulous.

Product of the Day: Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Anti-Frizz Serum

Alright. First things first. A little google search helped me figure out that this product retails for around...

$5!

Yes! 5 American Dollars! And it works just as well as salon brand, if not better!

It is useable on all hair types, can be applied wet or dry, and does exactly what its title says:

Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Anti-Frizz Serum

Stay tuned for our celeb of the day and special tips and more details on why I love this product so much...

Daniel's Tip #5, Bed Head Hook-up Mousse Wax

Try using this Hook-up instead of a gel or your regular mousse. A very, very little goes a long way. So start small. Our goal is to get you a new look, not to get you back into the shower!

So starting with your second spray, warm and mix between your hands and then apply at the roots, and on the layers of your style while hair is just a little damp (well towel dried). Style as usual!

Let me know if you have some more ideas or thoughts on this product!

p.s. funny tidbit of Hilary Swank? If you Google Image search for "Hilary Swank" about 15% of the images that come up are of Jennifer Garner (who is my personal assistant's absolute favorite, she points out). Do you think if you search for Jen Garner a bunch of pictures of Hilary come up?

Daniel's Tip #4, Bed Head Hook-up Mousse Wax

This is an excellent product if you have long bangs, or if you've made an ill-advised decision to cut bangs, or are growing out a style that it getting in your face in the in-between stages. It gives just enough hold to keep everything in place without looking hard or crunchy. (ewww... crunchy...)

Spray and itty bitty bit, less than 1 second. Again, let it rise, and the emulsify between your fingers only (don't even bother with your palms of your hands, you're not using that much!) Then simply place on your bangs, shaping into place.

Daniel's Tip #3, Bed Head Hook-up Mousse Wax

This Hook-up Mousse Wax is the hook-up if you have short hair as well! It can give a really hot style without greasing up your hair or making it look too wet.

Spray about 1 to 2 seconds into your hands. Again, let rise (it's like baking bread, but with sexier results!), then evenly distribute into hair. Make sure you piece out the layers and chunks to give a purposely messy look.

Daniel's Tip #2, Bed Head Hook-up Mousse Wax

This product is great as a "re-style" product. Let's say you did your hair in the morning, but got caught in the rain, or maybe worked out extra hard at the gym. You can use the wetness that life throws your way and causes some dampness and re-style your hair.

Spray the hair with just a little more water and apply a little product to re-define layers and put a little at the roots to re-emphasize the shape you probably had this morning!

Daniel's Tip #1, Bed Head Hook-up Mousse Wax

This product is great for medium weight hair to give texture with out weighing it down!

Hold the pump down for 2 seconds and dispense onto the palm of your hand. Leave it be until it fully expands. Emulsify in hand and apply from the back of the head up towards the crown! If more is needed use sparingly dont want to have a totally matte look, and you don't want to look like a product junky...

I love this celeb, because, to be honest... I forget she's a celeb! And then her name comes up, Hilary Swank, and I think "Yes! Golly I love her!" No one is ever going to overdose on Ms. Swank like they did on Bennifer. Remember Bennifer?

So check in all day to get swanky, Swank-ified looks!

Product of the Day: Bed Head Hook-up Mousse Wax

We're on a Bed Head kick here at Daniel Koye world!

Texture, texture, texture is what this gives you! Medium hold with a "messy" finish, adding both body an separation.

Keep tuned all day long for updates....

Daniel's Tip #3, Bed Head Headrush Superfine Mist

For short hair that has been over processed, let's put some life in it!

Spray closer to your head than our last tip, about 2-3 inches away, and go to town! No one will know your hair is fried. Just use in stages. Spray, finger through, assess. Spray some more, finger through, assess again.

It's always smart to work in stages!

Daniel's Tip #2, Bed Head Headrush Superfine Mist

Again, a great tip for anyone!

After blow-drying, hold spray 6-7 inches away from the head and spray in a moving motion. Finger through and you've got a fantastic finishing product!

Daniel's Tip #1, Bed Head Headrush Superfine Mist

Friends this product is so versatile and for any type of hair, I had problems deciding which celeb to focus on because anyone can use this product!

So I did what any self-respecting hair stylist does. I read a magazine.

Okay, so I went to People Magazine online, and who was on the cover? None other than our lovely Reese Witherspoon, showing off a perfect example of Tip #1!

Out running errands in beautiful CA, Reese exemplifies this simple tip:

Right out of the shower, take some Bed Head Headrush Superfine Mist (BHHSM) and spray into hair. A little goes a long way! Distribute with fingers, pull back into a soft bun and out the door you go. This will calm frizzing, and as it dries, it will create some soft waves. Remove bun once hair is dry.

Product of the Day: Bed Head Headrush Superfine Mist

It has gotten cold in NYC, and with cold weather generally comes dull, lifeless hair. Boo to that.

So insert our amazing product of the day:

This is an all-over, light coverage spray that helps shine, controls static, and adds depth to your beautiful color and highlights.

Check in all day long for insider application tips!

Daniel's Tip #5, Bed Head For Men Power Play Gel

So there is, sadly, no picture to really show Chance Crawford that proves he uses such a product in this special tip... but it's great for controlling unruly eyebrows! Can't say his eyebrows are particularly coiffed in this picture, so I bet there are mornings he wakes up and looks a bit brow-scary!

Dip your pointer finger just in the top of the squeeze tube (you don't even really need to squeeze it, just get a little on). Rub your two pointer fingers together, and then apply to brows. Keeps them in place all day long.

A strong brow is always sexy on a man, it's refined and serious! But too much brow, and a here-, there-, and everywhere-brow ends up looking a little too much like Burt from Sesame Street!

Ladies, again, this is one you can secretly steal. But why would you? You're perfect! You need no help in the brow department, do you?! (Shhhh... no one will tell!)

Daniel's Tip #4, Bed Head For Men Power Play Gel

So maybe your man is thinking "Babe, this is so easy, it's like child's play. I've been combin' and gelin' since the second grade! Tell me something I don't know!"

Well get him to try this wet look! And ladies with chin length hair, you can try this one too!

The hair must be slightly longer (no buzz cuts here, unfortunately). Instead of your 50 cents, add about an extra quarter (that's 75 cents now!), and emulsify in the palms of your hands. Starting at the back of the head near the nape of the neck, start applying in a backwards motion, towards the face and upwards. Concentrate on hitting each different layer of the hair.

Shake hair, and let dry.

Here's a warning though--it will find EVERY layer! If you hate it once it's dried you can always comb it out, but if you love it, rock it all day long!

Daniel's Tip #3, Bed Head For Men Power Play Gel

For a more "Chuck Bass" look (aka sleeked back and refined), you can apply to damp hair. So either towel dry or let air dry a little out of the shower, or simply dampen with a comb. (Let's be real, we know some guys barely make it out of the house in the morning, let alone wash their hair!)

Take no more than your 50 cents worth of product, emulsify in the hands and then run through hair. Use a comb to shape, and let product fully dry in the shape/direction desired. Then use the palm of your hand to smooth out comb marks.

Gotta love a good pompadour!

Daniel's Tip #2, Bed Head For Men Power Play Gel

This tip might not be as "shareable" unless you have very short, cropped hair.

On dry hair, your man can use as much as needed and either just comb through or use his fingers to separate. This will give you a whole lot of hold, and fast!

Daniel's Tip #1, Bed Head For Men Power Play Gel

Ladies, the holidays are coming, and here's a gift that keeps on giving!

No, sadly I'm not giving you Gossip Girl start Chance Crawford for Christmas. Though wouldn't that be fun??? Would if I could, though, lovelies. Would if I could...

This product is a perfect gift to give that special man you're close to. It smells divinely masculine and is totally worth cuddling up to on a cold, winter's day.

He can use about 50 cents worth of product (two quarters, ladies, not 50 pennies!) and emulsify it between his fingers, then just simply spread through hair. For a more shaggy look, just instruct him to shake his head and leave it be, or else he can piece together and separate his hair in a more controlled way if it's shorter or he's a bit more anal (let's say he's a Dan more than he's a Nate... :)

Also, you can feel free to use the same product! Really, what's the difference, except for the masculine smell? And I think there's nothing sexier than a woman with a strong, masculine scent. So rub some into your roots, toss and go. Just don't let him know you're using his present!

Daniel's Tip #5, Bed Head Cocky

Have you seen this month's Harper's Bazar showing our girl Vicky?

Cocky is a great product to achieve a really dramatic up-do, even if you have fine or short hair (chin length or longer).

First, apply a little to damp, towel-dried hair and blow dry with a round brush, focusing with all your might on getting lots and lots of volume at the roots!

After dry, apply more Cocky to your palms and start to shape the hair into a chignon or french twist. You can tame all the little fly aways with product, and secretly hide them away with a bobby pin as needed. Pin to your heart's content and enjoy your night on the town! You look smashing!

Daniel's Tip #4, Bed Head Cocky

More Words to the Wise about Cocky...

One of the things that Cocky doesn't do is add shine, but it does make a super-hot matte look to hair styles.

This product ADDs texture to the hair by, well, ADD-ing product to the hair. If you want to try this product, make sure you have a clarifying conditioner close at hand.

Also, your hands will be sticky, sticky, mcsctickerson when you're done using the product. Definitely apply near the sink!

Daniel's Tip #3, Bed Head Cocky

So this tip is almost identical to the Tip #2 Application with a completely different result. Instead of flipping hair over, take a round brush to blow dry your style.

Cocky will add volume to the roots, but also to the entirety of the style. So you get your every-day style, but turned up to volume 10!

Finish with a little extra Cocky (warmed up on the palms) and placed over your style to tame flyaways and perfect all angles and layers.

Daniel's Tip #2, Bed Head Cocky

According to TiGi you can apply Cocky to both wet and dry hair.

Here's my helpful hint that is so helpful it may prevent you needing an extra shower! Start small! This stuff is POW-ER-FULL! When I say use a dime sized amount, I'm not saying you need to get out your purse and find some change to measure, but just remember if you over-do it... that I told you so!

The first look we're going for today is just a texturized version of a short, layered cut. Towel dry hair, then squeeze out at most a dime of product. It will be very, very, VERY thick, but try your best to warm it between your hands. This will liquify it (as much as possible, it is pretty thick). Concentrating at the roots, apply product and massage into hair, and down into the layers.

Now simply flip your head over, hit with the hair dryer and watch the texture explode! Be careful though, because you could get too much! Periodically flip your head rightside-up to make sure you're not getting dandelion puff hair!

Daniel's Tip #1, Bed Head Cocky

Let's get one thing out of the way first thing this morning: not all products are for all hair types.

However, lots of products can be used in surprising ways.

Never overly judge your hair or a product, but also don't expect every product to work amazingly well on your specific hair cut, style, color, whatever!

So who is the perfect candidate for this product?
Short haired vixens with any texture hair, though the women with the thinnest hair may find it is too thick of a product and overcomes the hair texture. It's perfect for any other texture, however, if you use the right amount!

The product adds thickness, which is a little different than volume. Can it add volume? Absolutely! But thickness is adding extra texture where you want it--and it can be at the roots, which will add volume. Does that make sense?

Lastly, this product really soars with layered cuts, a la our celeb of the day. None other than the impeccable Victoria Beckham!
